Visconti Tarot Cards by Lo Scarabeo
78 cards with booklet. Card size: 70 x 120 mm

Extraordinary examples of Renaissance Art. The Visconti – Sforza Tarots restored to their original splendour by A. A. Atanassov. Imprinted Hot in Gold.

    From the booklet:

Those who believe that the art of miniature painting disappeared at the end of the Middle Ages couldn't be more wrong. In Eastern Europe, this refined technique continues today, so much so that it is still being taught in art schools.

Even if miniature painting is more or less confined to monastic centers, there are a few artists who 'modernize' it by producing original works. One of these is Atanas Alexander Atanassov, a brilliant Bulgarian painter to whom Lo Scarabeo has entrusted the difficult task of reproducing what is definitely the most famous deck of miniature cards: the Visconti-Sforza Tarot.

Today, the originals are partially housed at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, partially at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, and partially in the private collection of the Colleoni family of Bergamo.

This work was realized shortly after 1450 by an unknown Lombard artist, perhaps connected with the school of Francesco Zavattari, on behalf of the new Lord of Milan Francesco Sforza who had recently risen to power following his marriage to Bianca Maria Visconti, natural daughter of Duke Filippo Maria.

    John says:

These cards are simply beautiful. The gold imprint on black looks amazing. This is one of the oldest known tarot decks and four were missing from the original designs. Those four (the Devil, the Tower, Three of Swords and Knight of Pentacles) were later created using the analogies of the deck and the symbolism of the time. At least one other version of this deck exists (I know because I have it), with different interpretations of those four cards. Visconti Tarot is the tarot deck that inspired the French Tarot Marseilles.

The pip cards do not include pictorials. You will need some knowledge of numerology and the traditional suit attributions when using the Visconti Tarot. This tarot card deck is more suitable for experienced tarot readers and those interested in the history of the Tarots.
